Company Profile
St Andrew's Healthcare
Company Overview
St Andrew’s Healthcare provides specialist mental healthcare for people with challenging mental health needs.
We are a charity and our surpluses are reinvested in patient care; we have no shareholders or owners to pay dividends to, and we are proud to put people first.
We provide care across a number of services, including Men’s Mental Health, Women’s Mental Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), Neuropsychiatry, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and Learning Disability.
We care for some of the most clinically complex patients in the mental health system, people who could not, in many cases, be treated elsewhere. Many of our patients have been in the criminal justice system and are some of the most vulnerable people being treated anywhere in the health service.
Our vision: Transforming lives by building world-class mental healthcare services.
We’ll achieve our vision by delivering world-class, holistic care, developing innovative therapies and treatments, and putting people first to prioritise safety and recovery.
Our five-year target is to transfer 1,500 patients to lower levels of security. In the same time frame we want to drive our staff engagement up to 75 per cent, achieve 'Outstanding' ratings from the Care Quality Commission for our sites and generate £100m to invest in patient care.
The charity has four core values, known as our CARE values: Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence.
Every month, colleagues from across the charity nominate one another for displaying these value behaviours in their day-to-day work. We celebrate them through our CARE Awards scheme, which culminates in an awards dinner once a year.
We develop innovative ways to help our patients to recover, creating a personalised package of care designed around each individual, which focuses on their physical and spiritual wellbeing as well as mental health.
Our headquarters and largest site is in Northampton, but we also have facilities in Birmingham, Essex and Nottinghamshire which provide localised mental healthcare.
Company History
At St Andrew's Healthcare, we’re proud of our rich heritage in the provision of mental healthcare.
Our history as a charity begins in 1838 with the opening of our hospital at Northampton offering 'humane' care to the mentally ill.
St Andrew's was one of four Registered Psychiatric Hospitals that chose not to join the National Health Service in 1948, maintaining our charitable status.
The hospital building in Northampton was purpose designed by Mr George Wallet of the Bethlem Hospital. It was funded in large part from the reserves of the Northamptonshire Yeomanry, through the offices of Sir William Wake.
The original architecture is still appreciated by patients, some of whom reside in our Main Building, and many spend time in the parkland which surrounds it. The 106 acre estate at Northampton includes the Hospital Chapel of 1863, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, famous for The Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial.
St Andrew’s best-known past resident was Northamptonshire-born John Clare, England’s greatest rural poet. He died in 1864 after more than 22 years of care, having written many poems in the hospital.
Joseph Hassid, a pre-war Polish violinist compared with Heifetz and Menuhin, stayed briefly. Other artistic residents include Sir Malcolm Arnold, perhaps the greatest English composer of the twentieth century, who agreed to one of our newer buildings being named after him.
