PSYCHIATRIST, OPERATIONAL STRESS INJURY CLINIC
The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting immediately for a full or part-time psychiatrist for Nova Scotia Health’s (NSH) Operational Stress Injury Clinic in Dartmouth, NS Canada.
The Department of Psychiatry is a mid-sized clinical academic department within the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry work as members of multidisciplinary teams within the Nova Scotia Health Mental Health and Addiction Program to provide general psychiatric services to patients primarily in the Central Zone and specialty services to patients across the province.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- To be attending or consultant physician to ambulatory patients in the Operational Stress Injury Clinic.
- Conduct, order and ensure appropriate psychiatric assessments, appropriate psychosocial and laboratory investigations, and pharmacological & psychosocial interventions as per current standard practice.
- Take part in a psychiatry on-call schedule as required within the clinical program unless specifically exempted.
- Share in the short-term coverage of other services as needed during holidays or illness of other members of staff.
- Experience working with assessment of police, and/or Canadian forces members and Veterans with operational stress injuries including re post-trauma, anxiety, mood, and substance use is an asset.
Clinical duties:
- As directed by the Clinical Director and in keeping with the standards set out in the document “Veterans Affairs Canada Standards for OSI Clinics”
- Clinical direct and indirect care as part of an interdisciplinary OSI service delivery model
- Clinical "desk-side" teaching and didactic education
- Clinical administration
- Include on-call service
- Involve supervision of junior staff including residents and clinical clerks
- Support research as needed (and conduct it if personally desired)
- Educational Duties: Didactic teaching at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education level as determined in discussion with the Director of Education, Department of Psychiatry.
Research: Research and other scholarly innovation is encouraged; candidates who have a sufficient track record in mental health research may be eligible for protected research time depending on agreement with the Department of Psychiatry’s research and executive leadership.
Requirements
Eligibility: Fellowship in psychiatry, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent as determined by the Department of Psychiatry; eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. The annual remuneration for full time psychiatrists ranges is based upon academic rank, qualifications, and experience, as per university protocols and the Academic Funding Plan. Annual pay for Associate Professor level psychiatrists begins at $380,000, with additional remuneration paid for eligible on-call shifts covered and leadership roles. In addition to providing clinical services, psychiatrists at Dalhousie’s Department of Psychiatry provides dedicated time for academic and/or research activities. Successful candidates receive access to funding for personal and professional development annually as well as relocation financial support. Standard scheduling provides 4 weeks off for vacation, plus 10 days for statutory holidays.
