Blugibbon is recruiting Consultant Psychiatrists to join Wheatbelt Mental Health Services, based in Northam, Western Australia.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Psychiatrist to join an established regional mental health service and take on a senior clinical role across Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and/or General Adult Psychiatry.

The Opportunity

Northam Mental Health Service provides community-based mental health care across the Wheatbelt, supporting patients across a broad range of age groups and clinical presentations.

The wider Wheatbelt Mental Health Service includes:

• Aboriginal Mental Health

• General Adult Mental Health – 18–65 years

• Child & Adolescent Mental Health – 0–18 years

• Seniors Mental Health – 65+ years

• Youth Mental Health – 15–24 years

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide senior clinical expertise within a multidisciplinary service and have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of mental health care across the region.

The role can suit Consultants with experience in General Adult Psychiatry, CAMHS, or both, depending on service requirements and your clinical background.

Your Role

Your responsibilities may include:

• Providing comprehensive psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment

• Managing patients with complex and severe mental health presentations

• Providing specialist clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary team

• Providing expert psychiatric advice and consultation to GPs, healthcare professionals, carers and other service providers

• Supporting community-based mental health care

• Participating in clinical reviews and multidisciplinary case discussions

• Providing supervision, mentoring and teaching to psychiatry trainees and other medical staff

• Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement and service development

• Working collaboratively with Aboriginal Mental Health and other specialist programs

• Building strong relationships with local healthcare providers and community stakeholders

• Supporting the continued development of mental health services across the Wheatbelt

For Consultants working within CAMHS, the role also includes contributing to clinical reviews and supporting best-practice care for children, adolescents and young people.

The Team

You will join a multidisciplinary Mental Health Service comprising:

• Consultant Psychiatrists

• Psychiatry registrars

• Clinical Psychologists

• Social Workers

• Community Mental Health Nurses

• Child and Adolescent mental health professionals

• Aboriginal Mental Health Workers

• Other specialist mental health professionals

The service operates collaboratively, with Consultants working alongside experienced mental health professionals to provide coordinated care across the Wheatbelt.

You will report to the Director of Clinical Services – Mental Health and work as part of a wider team of Consultant Psychiatrists and registrars.

Clinical Scope

This is a broad regional psychiatry role rather than a highly sub-specialised metropolitan position.

The Wheatbelt service provides mental health care across the lifespan, giving Consultants the opportunity to work within their area of expertise while also contributing to a broader regional service.

Depending on your experience and the requirements of the service, there may be opportunities to work across:

General Adult Psychiatry | CAMHS | Youth Mental Health | Seniors Mental Health | Aboriginal Mental Health

The successful Consultant will also be expected to work collaboratively across the wider Wheatbelt where required. Occasional work at other mental health sites, including Narrogin, Merredin and Gingin, may form part of the role.

Salary & Benefits

The advertised Consultant salary is:

AUD $412,161 – $523,436 per annum

The advertised remuneration is in accordance with the WA Health System Medical Practitioners AMA Industrial Agreement 2024 and includes base salary, 12% superannuation and professional development allowance. Final remuneration is subject to assessment of qualifications, clinical skills and years of practice.

Who We're Looking For

The service is seeking experienced Consultant Psychiatrists with expertise in CAMHS and/or General Adult Psychiatry.

Applicants should have:

• Specialist registration, or eligibility for specialist registration, with the Medical Board of Australia (SIMG or expedited pathway) 

• Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), or an approved equivalent (MRCPsych + CCT in Psychiatry)

• Strong clinical experience relevant to the position

• A commitment to multidisciplinary working

• An interest in providing high-quality mental health care within a regional setting

• A willingness to contribute across the wider Wheatbelt where required

UK and Irish Psychiatrists may be eligible to apply through Australia's Expedited Specialist Pathway, subject to meeting the Medical Board of Australia's requirements.

For the expedited pathway, the advertised requirements include MRCPsych plus CCT/CCST, AMC primary source verification and an intention to live and work permanently in Australia.

Other specialist registration pathways may also be available depending on your qualifications and individual circumstances.
