What the role actually looks like
CAMHS inpatient and community services
Adult mental health inpatient and community teams
Forensic and specialist psychiatric services
Crisis and liaison psychiatry services
Independent and NHS settings nationwide
Day-to-day responsibilities will include:
Providing senior clinical leadership and overall medical responsibility for a defined caseload of patients
Conducting and overseeing comprehensive psychiatric assessments including risk assessment and formulation
Leading and contributing to MDT meetings, ward rounds, and care programme approach (CPA) reviews
Making and communicating diagnostic decisions and developing treatment plans in collaboration with patients and families
Prescribing and reviewing medication in line with NICE guidelines and evidence-based practice
Providing clinical supervision and leadership to junior medical staff, trainees, and the wider MDT
Ensuring compliance with the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and other relevant legislation
Maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation to GMC and Trust standards
Contributing to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives
Liaising with commissioners, legal teams, and external agencies as required
What we need from you
Essential:
Full GMC registration with a licence to practise — no conditions or restrictions
Approved Clinician (AC) status and Section 12(2) approval (or willingness to obtain)
Demonstrable experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist or in a senior psychiatric role
Strong clinical leadership and MDT working skills
Desirable (but not always required):
Additional sub-specialty experience (e.g. CAMHS, forensic, liaison, ADHD, eating disorders)
Experience in NHS and independent sector settings
Leadership or management experience at service or departmental level
Training approval or experience in supervising medical trainees
