St. VINCENT’S HOSPITAL, FAIRVIEW (Dublin, Ireland)

CONSULTANT CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRIST

This Consultant Psychiatrist Post sits within St. Joseph’s Child and Adolescent Inpatient Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Fairview. The unit primarily serves the Dublin North East administrative area, having a total population of just over one million.  This 12 bed unit also has a national remit and referrals from outside of the primary catchment area can be admitted at the discretion of the consultant. Referrals are accepted from community adult or child and adolescent mental health services of young people, currently 16 to 18 years of age, with moderate to severe and/or complex mental illness.

The Child and Adolescent Day Hospital caters for a younger age group and accepts referrals of young people, currently 12 to 17 years of age, from CHO 9 - Dublin North City and County (DNCC).

There is also a school on the grounds of St Vincent’s Hospital which is exclusive to children attending the day hospital and inpatient programmes.

This is an appointment to St. Vincent’s Hospital Fairview on a Type A basis under the Consultants’ Contract 2008 (as of 8th December 2014) – 39 hours per week - (Permanent, Wholetime).

The successful candidate must be Registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners, maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland, in the specialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Requirements

CONSULTANT CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRIST - Ref: SVHF-VFCPCP01-10-21

Purpose of the Post:

  1. Practice as Consultant Psychiatrist in Dublin in the HSE Administration area of Dublin North City & County Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), under the Contract for Consultants, employed in the Public Health Service 2008 by St. Vincent’s Hospital, Fairview;
  2. Develop and lead the delivery and management of specialist in-patient Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services in CHO Dublin North City & County based at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Fairview and ensure the service meets the needs of the young persons admitted to the unit and other stakeholders;
  3. Assume medical responsibility for the care and treatment of the young persons admitted to the unit and ensure that a regularly reviewed multidisciplinary Care Plan is in place;
  4. Ensure a high standard of care for each patient and assist in the development of best practice protocols in line with emerging research and best practice;
  5. Be responsible for the maintenance of appropriate communication and liaison arrangements between his/her service and the patient’s normal medical/healthcare attendants e.g. General Practitioners, community CAMHS team and/or other healthcare professionals as required;
  6. Work closely with the multidisciplinary team and other social care agencies, as appropriate, in providing a comprehensive in-patient child & adolescent mental health service for the under 18 population and ensure that mechanisms for the co-ordination of care between the multidisciplinary team and other health and social care agencies are established and maintained;

Eligibility Requirements

The successful candidate must be Registered as a Specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners, maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland, in the specialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Health

A candidate for and any person holding the post must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character

A candidate for and any person holding the post must be of good character.

Entry to competition and subsequent appointment

For the purposes of eligibility for entry to any competition or recruitment process associated with this post, a candidate must fulfil the eligibility requirements laid down in the information pack for the post.

The successful interviewee must be registered as a Specialist in the relevant specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland before taking up appointment. The candidate will be allowed a max of 180 calendar days from date of interview to secure this registration and produce evidence of special interest training where relevant.

Should the successful candidate not be registered as a Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate.  Should no suitable candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.
