Requirements

The Department of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University is recruiting for two forensic psychiatrists at the East Coast Forensic Psychiatric Hospital:  clinical director and forensic psychiatrist.

The East Coast Forensic Psychiatric Hospital (ECFH), in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, is a key component of the provincial Mental Health and Addictions program within Nova Scotia Health. It is also an academic hospital affiliated with the Dalhousie Department of Psychiatry. The ECFH embraces a co-leadership model, and the clinical director works closely with the administrative director of the ECFH in all aspects of operation.

The services supplied by the hospital encompass 60 inpatient rehabilitation beds, 24 beds for Forensic Assessment and Correction Treatment (FACT unit), two bungalows on the premises allowing semi-independent accommodations for seven clients, and a community program for those on conditional discharge. The ECFH is mandated to provide court ordered assessments and rehabilitation services for NCR acquitees and unfit accused in Nova Scotia and has a negotiated agreement with Prince Edward Island to conduct court ordered assessments for courts in that province. This makes the hospital the largest forensic psychiatric facility in the Atlantic region and the largest east of Montreal.

The hospital is also responsible for the delivery of Correctional Health services for individuals on remand or serving custodial sentences.  Hospitalists and psychiatrists deliver care via in person assessment and virtual care to several correctional facilities across the province.

Remuneration:  The positions are funded through an Academic Funding Plan. This covers direct and indirect care, virtual care, clinical administration, care coordination, etc.  Psychiatric call is remunerated as per Department of Psychiatry funding mechanism.  Academic ranking is also remunerated.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply, although Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.  Dalhousie University is committed to fostering a collegial culture grounded in diversity and inclusiveness. The university encourages applications from Indigenous persons, persons with a disability, racially visible persons, women, persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community.
